The objective of this study was to find a wearable device system that could be taken home with patients to allow them to monitor their symptoms continuously at home. In order to develop a home based monitoring system, we tested different devices including a smartwatch and phone and developed a mobile application that could capture the motion data from the devices continuously.
We then tested this system against standard measurement tools including a gait mat and 3D motion capture system in the PfIRe Lab in order to make sure the results from the phone and watch were accurate and reliable. We also used this system to develop an algorithm to analyze walking patterns. We were able to conclude that the mobile app, along with smartwatch and phone, and the algorithm are able to generate data that can be used in future clinical trials.
